Many collections are based on a theme, animals or flowers on notes for instance, others find collecting by date or signature more interesting. My first banknote was a German 10,000 Mark note, (pick 70), bought at a Coin Fair back in the mid 1970s, when I was about 14.
A dealer explained to me that if you turned the note sideways, the portrait of a young man by Albrecht Durer revealed a "vampire" at his throat. The contemporary interpretation of this was that the "vampire" was sucking the life blood out of the nation, - a handy piece of propaganda, and a nice introduction for me, to a fascinating hobby.
